Laptop Notebook Sales Can keep You A Lot of Money, If You're stylish
Computers, especially notebook computers, are a prime example of a 'disposable' electronic item. Due to Moore's Law and transistor count doubling every 18 months, the capabilities of computers progress as regularly as clockwork. Which means that what was a high end machine last Christmas may be deep in the discount bin now.
The reason why sale notebooks are popular is the same reason that Intel Atom-powered netbooks are popular: For most computing tasks, there's no real downside to having a machine that's less than the extreme top-end-of-the-market. No matter how much Microsoft has cluttered up Windows with the Aero interface, advances in processor technology keep bailing them out…and for the people who primarily use a notebook for surfing the weapon, doing some word processing and writing emails, the vast majority of laptops released in the last three years (almost two complete generations) are more than adequate.
Intel is aware of this; the Atom processor is roughly comparable to a Pentium IV in overall capabilities, yet consumes about 5 watts when run (a typical laptop CPU runs about 30 watts). This allows Atom driven computers to run for hours at a time from a fairly modest battery. This processor came on to the market in the second half of 2008, and is now pretty much the category standard. However, even as the category standard, netbook go through the sale notebook phenomenon. Machines that entered the market at $400 are now selling for $250 as the manufacturers compete for consumer demand.
This same practice applies in other notebooks laptop sale categories. By cruising local wholesale style retailers (Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, etc), you can try and type on some of these machines and get a feel for them…however, it's usually worth your trouble to ask about any notebook sales they may have, selling models that are a few months behind the curve. You can often times score significant bargains on notebooks laptop sales by doing this.
Another place to get a good deal on sale notebooks is online, through vendors like Amazon, NewEgg and eBay. These places regularly have notebooks laptop sales, or sales on laptops, as inventory turns, or even as press releases for competing models come up into place. It's worth it to check these sites regularly for models you want. EBay is the best place to buy sale notebooks that have just been released, because there are people who buy them in other countries before they reach the US and re-sell them here to the rabid "early adopter crowd".
Whenever you buy a notebook that's on sale, make sure that you're getting the full kit – the charger, a new (or nearly new) battery, and all accessories that come with it. If it comes with a manufacturer's warranty, make sure that's specified before you buy.
What CPU processor is better?
I am going off to college for the fall and they recommend a minimum processor for PC laptops to be Intel Core i5 2540M. I currently have on my PC laptop a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @2.3GHz. Do i meet the minimum requirements?
The i5 has 4 cores and 4 threads. Pentium has 2 cores and 1 thread. In other words it will run your stuff but will eventually run slower with the more things you put in. Id say upgrade to a processor in the i3,i5,i7 series but its up to you.
Intel releases new Core i7-2600k CPU (Extremetech)
As expected, Intel has moved to silence any Bulldozer dissenters and released
the 3.5GHz Core i7-2700k CPU, a 100MHz upgrade over the popular i7-2600k.
