Why is my Pentium III PC freezing up on me? How can I fix this?
I've got an old Pentium III (Intel Coppermine CPU, 868 MHz) PC with 384MB RAM and a 10GB HD that I recently wiped and reloaded with Debian Linux. Even prior to the Linux installation, the PC would freeze up on me usually after 5-10 minutes of use, but sometimes after a couple of hours. The problem seems to be getting worse. I'm not getting any error messages to help diagnose the issue.
I've cleaned out the case & fan, and the fan's working properly. The only peripherials I'm using right now are an old PS2 Mouse & keyboard, a 15" LCD monitor and the original CD drive and ethernet card that came with the PC. I haven't loaded any apps other than the basic Debian instal.
Any ideas? Thanks.
re-seat the memory? heat is probably working them out.
fan working on the processor?
power supply still on when the machine stops working? If not, the p.s. might be shutting down to over heating - fan working inside it? possible bad capacitor on the motherboard. run your finger over the top of them and feel for bubbling...
