Dry socket - causes,symptoms and treatment

INTRODUCTION                                                                                                                                                                 Dry socket is any socket in which a patient is having pain due to the loss of the blood clot thus exposing the bone to air, food, and fluids along with an offensive odor.  This often occurs two or more days after an extraction and can last about 5-6 days.  It is normal to have soreness and discomfort following an extraction. However, pain should be lessening by the second day.

This condition exist when a blood clot is dislodged from the surgery site thus exposing the bone and fine nerve endings. The blood clot helps in the stopping of bleeding and lays the foundation or framework for new tissue and bone to develop over a two-month healing process.  This condition is more common in the mandibular area and in back teeth due to poorer circulation in this area, with wisdom teeth being the most common site.  Dry socket delays the healing process. It usually takes gum tissue about 3-4 weeks to heal where as the bone can take up to six months to heal. Only a very small percentage -- about 2% to 5% of people -- develop dry socket after a tooth extraction. In those who have it, though, dry socket can be very uncomfortable. Fortunately, it's easily treatable.                                                   

 

FACTORS PREDISPOSING TO DRY SOCKET

1.Smoking

2.Poor oral hygiene

3. During extraction of wisdom tooth

4.Greater than usual trauma during the tooth extraction surgery

5. Patients on birth control pills

6.Patients having  a history of dry socket after having teeth pulled

7.Rinsing and spitting a lot or drinking through a straw after having a tooth extracted also can  increase your risk of getting dry socket.                                                                                                    

 

 

SYMPTOMS

 

If you look into the site where the tooth was pulled, you'll probably see a dry-looking opening. Instead of a blood clot, there will just be bone. The pain typically starts about two days after the tooth was pulled. Over time it becomes more severe and can radiate to your ear.

Other symptoms of dry socket include  bad breath and an unpleasant smell and taste in your mouth.

 

 

HOW TO PREVENT DRY SOCKET

1.Smoking is a big risk factor for dry socket, avoid cigarettes, cigars, and any other tobacco products for a day or so before your surgery.

                                                                                                                                               2. If you take birth control pills, ask your dentist about performing the extraction on a day when you are getting the lowest dose of estrogen. The hormone can affect the ability of the blood to clot. Also, check with your dentist about other medications you are taking that can interfere with normal blood clotting.

3.After surgery, avoid drinking through a straw and spitting for the first few days.

4.Don't rinse your mouth more than your dentist recommends. If you do rinse -- do so gently. Be sure to visit your dentist for all scheduled follow-up visits.

 5.Keeping food from impacting in this area.  Chew on the other side of your mouth and gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after the first 24 hours.                                                                                    

 

TREATMENT  

 

1.Take analgesics

 

 2.Clove oil technique.

 

 3.Gauze with medication.

 

 4.Additional home care instructions.

     

5.Good oral health care.

 

 6.Avoid food with any residuals...popcorn, peanuts and pasta

 

 7.Eat soft foods...mashed potatoes, clear or cream soups that don't contain any residue, puddings

 

 8.Patients usually notice pain relief in about 5-10 minutes after the dressing is applied.   Continue these instructions for the next 3-4 days.

How do you repair a surfboard fin ripped from its socket? Pics included?

cI damaged my mini malibu surfboard when riding a wave in and tore the middle fin out of its socket in the boards tail. I have uploaded two pictures as you can see below this question. How do I repair this?

I've fixed many broken and ripped out fins over the years. If you don't know what you are doing you can really wreck how your board performs. The biggest problems, besides looks of course, is not getting the fin exactly vertical, having it slightly twisted so it causes water to flow irregularly with your other fins, and finally not sanding the base so the water flows around properly. Best you go to a shop.

from the Travel Noodle gives photographers instructions on how to create a
string pod, which is essentially a tripod made of string.

The supplies you will need include:

* A piece of string that is a little bit longer than your own height

* a 1/4" eye bolt (this will work for most cameras, although you may want to
confirm the size of your camera's tripod socket at the hardware store)

* A large washer

You will begin by tying one end of the string to the eye bolt and the other
end to the washer. Next, screw the eye bolt into the tripod socket of your
